William P. Nakunas, 88, departed this life on Saturday, March 17, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A longtime resident of Carmichael, California, he spent the past two and a half years in Chappell Hill, Texas, with his only daughter and son-in-law. William was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania, on April 5, 1918, the third son and sixth child of John and Mary Nakunas. He attended California Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo, California, where he excelled in football before being called to defend his country in World War II. He served in England in the 8th Army Air Corps. After the war he worked as a civilian aircraft inspection supervisor at Mather Air Force Base in Sacramento, California. He loved sports all his life, especially golf and football. William is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John and George; his sisters Nellie, Alverna, and Mary; and his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Melba. He is survived by his sister Florence Gummo of Yorktown, Virginia, and by his brother-in-law Ed Ponganis of Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his daughter, Monterey White and her husband Richard, as well as three grandchildren: William P. White and wife Susan of Phoenix, Arizona; Jacqueline White of Baytown, Texas; and Megan Merchant and husband Moiz, of North Hollywood, California. William is also survived by six great-grandchildren, whom he loved and enjoyed very much: Richard, Joseph, Logan, Elizabeth, Michael, and Ethan. There are numerous nieces and nephews who survive him as well.
