James Pohl

JC Pohl, 84, passed away peacefully at CHI St. Joseph in Bryan, Texas, on October 16, 2022.

Funeral service for JC Pohl will be Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, TX with Pastor David Tinker officiating. Interment to follow in the Carmine Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022 from 7 a.m. to 8.pm. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham, Texas.

James Curtis Pohl was born on July 23, 1938, in Carmine, Texas to parents Ermagarten (Jacob) and Richard Pohl. He was baptized at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, Oct. 16, 1938 with Pastor Henry Brunotte and he affirmed his faith through confirmation on November 4, 1951 with Pastor A. T. Kluge. JC’s confirmation verse was John 5:24. JC grew up in Carmine, Texas and graduated from Round Top Carmine High School in 1957.

On March 19, 1957, JC was united in marriage to the love of his life, Avalda Ida (Mueller) at MLLC. They shared over 65 wonderful years together and were blessed with 3 children, Debbie, Jody, and Connie to their union.

JC worked alongside of his father until 1991, when he took over ownership of the City Garage.  JC took pride in the work skills he possessed and customer service at the City Garage. JC had a servant’s heart he rarely turned down services needed even to strangers when they could not pay. Those who visited the City Garage frequently, know he introduced “air tools” in the form of “air born” wrenches to Carmine.

JC’s pride and joy was the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department in which he served as a the Fire Chief and President throughout many years. He joined the Fire Department at the young age of 15, at this time it started with only two 1946 model trucks and an army barrack meeting room. Throughout the years, he helped build the department into what it is today.

JC had many hobbies and interests, from an early age he loved baseball, in which he excelled. After high school, he continued to play Sunday league baseball, then transitioned into men’s slow pitch softball, and finished his baseball career coaching Jake’s Chicks women’s softball.  One of JC’s life’s pleasures was deer hunting with his fellow hunters. He enjoyed video taping the deer and other wildlife at his deer stand and sharing his videos with his family and friends. JC also enjoyed camping with his family and extended family in his converted school bus.  JC enjoyed daily trips with his beloved wife Avalda to their camphouse in to tend to their herd of longhorns and Charolais.  JC had a soft heart for animals in need he adopted and loved many strays through his life.

JC proudly served his country in the National Guard Armory. He was stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana where he was appointed Motor Pool Sergeant. His platoon received awards for the best kept vehicles and two awards for sharpest looking jeep.

JC was very active in the numerous community organizations throughout the Fayette County area. Some of his services and accolades were; President of the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department, Past President of Round Top Carmine ISD School Board, Past President of the Lions Club, Past President of Carmine Gun and Rod Club (Old Flag Pond), 2016 Carmine Citizen of the Year, the very first City Council which helped start the Carmine Water Supply and forming of the City Park, MLLC Church Council member and Building Committee of the new church, Fayette County Appraisal District Tax Board, Sales Representative of Farm Bureau, American Legion member, Carmine State Bank Board Member, and a member of the Carmine Hall.

JC is survived by his wife, Avalda Pohl, daughter, Debbie Eckert (Ronnie), son, Jody Pohl (Evelyn), daughter, Connie Peters (Michael), grandchildren: Andrew Eckert (Stacy), Josh Eckert (Lindsey), Brooke Eckert (fiancé Rick Klausmeyer), Joey Pohl (Nikki), Jared Pohl (Ashley), Kayla Peters, Jordan Peters, Mikey Gonzales, Megan Gonzales (fiancé-Dr. Alfredo Sardinas), Mason Gonzales, great-grandchildren: Allie Eckert, Peyton Franklin, Avery Franklin, Gracie Eckert, Kalli Pohl, Jaycie Pohl, Kylie Pohl, Aleah Pohl, Brooke Smith brother-in-law, Alvis Mueller nieces: Renee Mueller, Jill Finke (Rodney).

JC is preceded in death by his parents, Erma & Richard Pohl, mother-in-Law and father-in-Law: Ida & John Mueller, sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Shirley & J D Mueller, and granddaughter, Karlee Layne Peters.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Eckert, Josh Eckert, Joey Pohl, Jared Pohl, Floyd Etzel, Berrie Etzel, Ricky Kieke, and Dustin Majewski.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jerry Jacob, Rueben Wunderlich, Calvin Coufal, Dennis Gerland, and Daryl Ray.

Memorials in honor of JC may be given to the Carmine Volunteer Fire Department P.O. Box 217, Carmine, TX 78932 or the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter 240 Svovoda Lane, La Grange Texas, 78945.
